Erik L. Torgerson, M.D.

Dr. Torgerson joined Swedish Urology Group in 2000.  He received his medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine where he graduated with honors and was named to Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society.  He trained in General Surgery and Urology at the University of California, Los Angeles.  As a resident, he participated in prostate cancer research.  He received numerous accolades during his training at UCLA including the Willard Goodwin Award for Excellence in Resident Education, Resident of the Year (1995), Department of Surgery, and Golden Heart Award/Resident of the Year (1994), Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery.  Since joining Swedish Urology Group, Dr. Torgerson has been named multiple times as one of Seattle's best urologists by both Seattle Metropolitan Magazine and Seattle Magazine.

Dr Torgerson's interests in Urology include voiding dysfunction/incontinence, benign and malignant prostate disease, stone disease and vasectomy.  He is also very involved in the training of other physicians in radioactive seed implantation for prostate cancer through the Seattle Prostate Institute.

Dr Torgerson was raised in Houston, Texas but his family roots are in the Northwest.  He is married with two children.  His hobbies include foreign travel, foreign languages and skiing.  He is fluent in Italian and Spanish.  Dr Torgerson's wife is an Italian native and he hopes one day to spend more time enjoying the Italian culture and countryside.


James Porter, M.D.

James Porter, M.D. Jim Porter is the most experienced laparoscopic surgeon in the Pacific Northwest. Dr. Porter graduated from the Medical College of Ohio in 1990 and completed his residency in Urology at the University of Washington in 1996. He remained on the faculty at the U.W., where he achieved the rank of Associate Professor. He received his laparoscopic training in Heilbron, Germany, and returned to be the first surgeon in the Northwest to use the laparoscopic approach for radical and donor nephrectomy, partial nephrectomy, retroperitoneal lymph node dissection, and radical prostatectomy.

Before joining Swedish Urology Group, Dr. Porter served as Chief of Urology at Harborview Medical Center and subsequently as Head of Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery in the Department of Urology at the University of Washington Medical Center. He has directed the Laparoscopic Fellowship in Urology there and has been active in teaching and promotion of laparoscopic minimally invasive surgical techniques to the regional and national urologic community. Dr. Porter also performs cutting-edge surgery using the da Vinci surgical system such as the da Vinci® prostatectomy. Swedish Urology Group is excited to announce the addition of Dr. Porter to our practice.


James Kuan, M.D.

James Kuan, M.D. Dr Kuan joins Swedish Urology Group from the University of Washington where he was on faculty and received fellowship training in Urologic Trauma and Reconstruction at Harborview Medical Center. He also has extensive training in endourolgic management of stone disease, and he has authored numerous peer-reviewed papers and textbook chapters, on the topics of trauma, urethral reconstruction and erectile dysfunction. 

He brings a unique set of clinical and surgical skills to our practice and the Pacific Northwest.  He enjoys practicing general urology with special interests in reconstruction and stone disease.  His reconstructive interests include complex urethral stricture disease (open urethroplasty), male sexual dysfunction, male incontinence, prosthetic surgery (inflatable penile implant and artificial urinary sphincter insertion), Peyronie's disease, adult hypospadias and genital skin disease including reconstruction using skin grafts. 

Dr Kuan was raised in Canada, is a medical graduate of the University of Saskatchewan, and completed his Urology training at the University of Western Ontario.  He is American board certified and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada.  Now living in Seattle he divides his time between work and triathlon training, with plans to complete a full Ironman in 2008.
